The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is a charity-based organization that was created by the Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin about one decade ago. The two have had successful careers as journalists, and they founded to news magazines that are called the Village Voice Media and Phoenix New Times.
They got the funds to establish the fund from a lawsuit that they had filed against Joe Arpaio, the former Maricopa County sheriff, for violating their Fifth Amendment rights. A federal judge ruled that the county government should pay them a settlement fee of $3.75 million. Jim and Michael are committed to protecting human, civil, and immigrant rights.
Michael and Jim’s organization has been supporting the operations of several activist groups, and one of them is the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition. The immigration foundation is led by the youths, and it has been advocating for the rights of young immigrants who wish to have legal employment in the Arizona. It was established by unknown students and has been striving to ensure that many dreamers can accomplish their goals.
The organization is against the 2006 law, which demands that immigrant students who are not documented are required to pay very high tuition fees for them to study in American learning institutions. Read more: Michael Larcey | Crunchbase and Michael Larcey | Twitter
The law also blocks the students from being offered publicly sponsored scholarships that are merit-based. The oppression of the immigrant students motivated them to establish the DREAM group to fight for their rights. They fought hard against ethnic injustices that Latin youths faced.
Another major organization that benefits from the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU’s Arizona branch was created in 1959 and is dedicated to fighting against unconstitutional laws that have been designed to target the minorities in the state. To date, the institution has accomplished a lot. In 1960, it successfully overturned a law that was created to ban multi-racial marriages in Arizona.
The group is also famous for its involvement in the Ernesto Miranda case that led to the formation of the Miranda warning. It also defended Michael Lacey and Jim Larking when they were arrested by the sheriff in 2007. ACLU has become of the most influential groups in Arizona.
The minority rights activist group has been defending the freedom of speech of day workers. It worked with the legal team that ended the “Papers Please” SB 1070 law, which gave the police power to enforce immigration. It is currently fighting Arizona Gov.
Jan Brewer’s executive order that stopped the issuing of driving licenses to immigrants who are legally working in the United States. The ACLU of Arizona has currently joined efforts with the Tucson and San Diego division to make their operations more efficient.
